On June 22, a group of volunteers from the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oświęcim took part in an educational trip to Łódź.
The trip was organized by the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust as a reward for their work during the 2025/2026 school year. In our case, this involved transcribing the testimonies of Survivors.
During the visit, participants explored sites connected to the Holocaust (Łódź was home to the second-largest Jewish ghetto). The tour began at Radegast Station, which during World War II served as a freight transshipment point—used both for delivering food to the ghetto and for transporting goods produced by its inhabitants. It was also the arrival point for displaced persons entering the ghetto and the departure point for Jews deported to the Chełmno extermination camp.
The next stop was the Jewish Cemetery (New Cemetery), the largest Jewish necropolis in Europe. During the Holocaust, victims and deceased residents of the ghetto were buried there, including approximately 600 Roma and Sinti deported from Austria.
The final point of the visit was Przemysłowa Street, where during World War II a camp for Polish children operated. Nearby stands the Monument of the Martyrdom of Children, also known as the Broken Heart Monument.
